Kevin Gibson

With a legal practice concentrated on the litigation of construction disputes, Kevin regularly assists clients in matters related to offshore oil and gas installations, mining and infrastructure projects, as well as complex commercial, administrative and tort matters. A seasoned lawyer, he has successfully presented cases as counsel in the Nova Scotia Supreme Court, the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal, the Supreme Court of Canada and before arbitration panels in construction claims.

Kevin regularly advises owners, architects, engineers and contractors in the negotiation, drafting and interpretation of procurement and construction agreements, including those in significant public transportation, P3 and hydro-electric energy infrastructure projects. He has advised governments and government agencies across Canada in negotiating and drafting construction agreements for civil works projects, athletic facilities and public housing projects and drafted procurement policies for public and institutional clients, including municipalities and universities.

Drawing on his deep understanding of the legal and construction industries, Kevin has published articles in the areas of construction contracts, international trade and professional liability and has lectured frequently in the Construction Association of Nova Scotia and industry seminars on the resolution of construction disputes, the law of tendering and construction contracts, as well as electronic and traditional procurement methods. In 2021, Kevin was inducted as a fellow of the Canadian College of Construction Lawyers.

Active in university affairs, Kevin served for many years as Secretary of the Board of Governors of the University of King’s College, and he co-founded the course in Construction Law at the Schulich School of Law at Dalhousie University, where he previously taught Civil Trial Practice for several years. Kevin is also a member of the Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society, the Law Society of Newfoundland and Labrador and the Canadian Bar Association, where he was chair of the Nova Scotia Construction and Infrastructure Law Section from 2017 until 2019.
