Michael Murphy

Recognized consistently by The Best Lawyers in Canada in the field of labour and employment law, Michael prioritizes a pragmatic client-centred approach, with a strong focus on risk mitigation and the formulation of strategic, cost-effective resolutions.

Michael represents both provincially and federally regulated clients working in the private and public sectors. He has appeared before various courts, arbitrators, mediators, and administrative tribunals across Canada covering a diverse spectrum of workplace-related disputes as well as regulatory matters. This encompasses matters ranging from wrongful dismissals and employment standards complaints to occupational health and safety charges, labour arbitrations, and human rights complaints. Michael is also a trusted advisor to employers on various workplace and human resources matters, including advising on obligations related to occupational health and safety regulations, managing issues pertaining to performance, discipline, and terminations, as well as negotiating and drafting employment contracts. Additionally, Michael also advises on the administration of pension and benefits plans, as well as the development and implementation of workplace policies and training initiatives.

An accomplished speaker, Michael has delivered presentations at numerous conferences on topics in his field. He presently serves as the Vice Chair of the CBA – NS Labor and Employment Law section, and his experience in Labour and Employment Law has been recognized in The Best Lawyers™ in Canada (2022 and 2023). Prior to practicing law, Michael earned his JD from the Schulich School of Law at Dalhousie University in 2012. He is called to the bar in Nova Scotia (2013) and Ontario (2020).

Outside of the office, Michael is a published writer and musician. He also teaches Alternative Dispute Resolution at Dalhousie’s Schulich School and Law.
